Procedures of replacing an electric fuel pump:
1. Disconnect the ground terminal at the battery.
2. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the electric fuel pump. Label the wires to help in connecting it to the new pump. Reversing electrical slip rings on most pumps destroy the unit.
three. Fuel and vapor lines need to be removed from the pump. Label the lines to help in connecting them to the new pump.
4. The inside tank pump can commonly be taken out of the tank by removing the fuel sending unit retaining or lock ring. Even so, it may well be needed to eliminate the fuel tank to get at the retaining ring. Removal of the fuel tank can be accomplished as described earlier in this chapter.
5. On a fuel pump that is outside the tank, take away the bolts holding it in spot. On in-tank models, loosen the retaining ring. slip ring and sending unit out of the tank (if they are combined in one unit) and discard the tank O-ring seal.
6. To get rid of the pump, twist off the filter sock, then push the pump up until the bottom is clear of the bracket. Swing the pump out to the side and pull it down to free it from the rubber fuel line coupler. The rubber sound insulator involving the bottom of the pump and bracket and the rubber coupler on the fuel line are usually discarded mainly because new ones are integrated with t he replacement pump. Some pumps have a rubber jacket about them to quiet the pump. If this is the case, slip off the jacket and place it on the new pump.
7. Compare the replacement pump with the old one particular. If necessary, transfer any fuel line fittings from the old pump to the new one. Note the position of the filter sock on the pump so you can set up a new one particular in the exact same relative position.
eight. When inserting the new pump back into the sending unit bracket, be cautious not to bend the bracket. Make PCB slip ring under the bottom of the pump is in place. Install a new filter sock on the pump inlet and reconnect the pump wires. Be completely certain you have correct polarity. Replace the O-ring seal on the fuel tank opening, then put the pump and sender assembly back in the tank and tighten the locking ring by rotating it clockwise. Some pump/sender assembly units are secured by bolts.
9. If the fuel was removed from the automobile, replace it.
10. Reconnect the electrical connectors.
11. Reconnect the ground terminal at the battery.
12. Start the engine and check all connections for fuel leaks.
Warning: Keep away from the temptation to test the new pump prior to reinstalling the fuel tank, by energizing it with a couple of jumper wires. Running the pump dry can harm it simply because the pump relies on fuel for lubrication and cooling.
